A devastating landslide in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district has resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people and left several others injured after a bus was engulfed by falling debris. The tragic incident occurred on a treacherous stretch of road, highlighting the ongoing risks posed by natural calamities in the hilly state during monsoon season.
The Incident
Reports indicate that the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus was traveling from Manali to Haridwar when it was struck by a massive landslide near the village of Ghandal, on the National Highway 205. The bus was carrying a significant number of passengers, and the force of the falling rocks and mud pushed the vehicle into a deep gorge.
Emergency services, including police, district administration officials, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, immediately launched a massive rescue operation. The challenging terrain and continuous threat of further landslides made the rescue efforts extremely difficult. Local villagers also joined in, assisting with the arduous task of pulling out victims from the mangled wreckage and debris.
Initial reports from eyewitnesses described a horrific scene, with the bus being completely crushed by the landslide. Many victims were trapped inside, while others were thrown from the vehicle. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with some in critical condition.
PM Expresses Grief
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the tragic incident. In a statement, the Prime Minister conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. He assured that all possible assistance was being provided to the affected individuals and families by the state and central governments.
Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh also visited the site and announced immediate relief measures for the victims and their families. He emphasized the need for increased vigilance and precautionary measures in landslide-prone areas, especially during the monsoon season which often brings heavy rainfall and geological instability.
Monsoon Mayhem in Himachal
Himachal Pradesh is particularly vulnerable to landslides and flash floods during the annual monsoon season. The heavy downpours often destabilize the fragile Himalayan slopes, leading to frequent road closures and tragic accidents. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by residents and tourists alike in the region during this period. Authorities continue to urge caution and advise against unnecessary travel on vulnerable routes.
The rescue operations are ongoing as teams search for any remaining victims or survivors amidst the debris. The focus now shifts to providing support to the affected families and ensuring comprehensive medical care for the injured.
