Karnataka Govt Modifies ‘Anna Bhagya’ Scheme, To Provide ‘Indira Kit’ Instead of 5 Kg Rice

Karnataka Cabinet

The Karnataka Cabinet has announced a major modification to the state’s flagship welfare program, the ‘Anna Bhagya’ scheme, which previously provided 10 kg of free rice to each member of families under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category. Under the revised plan, beneficiaries will now receive an ‘Indira Kit’ in place of 5 kg of the total rice entitlement.

According to official sources, the Indira Kit will include a mix of essential grocery items such as cooking oil, dal, salt, sugar, and other daily-use commodities, aimed at offering balanced nutritional support to poor families. The remaining 5 kg of rice will continue to be distributed through the Public Distribution System (PDS) as before.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that the decision was taken after discussions in the Cabinet to ensure beneficiaries receive greater value and variety in their monthly ration. “The government wants to provide not just food security but also nutritional security. The Indira Kit will help families access essential items that are often unaffordable,” he said.

The move comes amid rising food prices and logistical challenges in rice procurement. By replacing part of the rice quota with diversified essentials, the government hopes to improve the efficiency and nutritional outcome of the scheme.

The Anna Bhagya scheme, launched by the Congress government, has been one of its key welfare measures aimed at tackling hunger and poverty across the state. Officials confirmed that the new Indira Kit will be distributed through fair price shops starting next month, with priority given to rural and economically backward areas.

Opposition parties have welcomed the idea in principle but have demanded clarity on quality, pricing, and timely distribution of the kits. The government is expected to release detailed guidelines shortly.
