The northeast-monsoon season is now gaining strength over Tamil Nadu, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has flagged a Yellow Alert for Chennai and nine surrounding districts, as heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds is expected to persist over the next few days.

According to IMD bulletins:
- The Yellow Alert covers Chennai and nearby districts such as Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu among others, where rainfall of 6-12 cm or more in 24 hours is possible.
- The forecast also highlights the possibility of localised urban flooding, water-logging, and disruption to transport in low‐lying areas.
Meteorological Cause
The increase in rain activity is attributed to:
- The onset phase of the northeast monsoon and the interaction of moist easterly flows from the Bay of Bengal with the landmass of Tamil Nadu.
- Regional upper-air circulation and convergence zones that enhance thunderstorms and convective penetration.
What Residents Should Do
Here are practical safety measures given the warning:
- Avoid low-lying and water-logged roads during rain spells—urban flooding is a risk in city suburbs.
- Secure outdoor items and avoid open terraces during thunderstorms; lightning and gusty winds may accompany the rainfall.
- Fishermen and coastal operations should remain updated on advisories; rough seas and strong wind gusts may follow.
- Prepare for transportation disruptions: Roads might be slippery, visibility reduced, public transport may face delays.

The Yellow Alert suggests a “be aware” stance—while not as severe as an Orange or Red alert, the rainfall nevertheless may cause moderate disruptions and risks in vulnerable locations. If the system intensifies, alert levels may be upgraded.
