IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has clarified reports about large-scale layoffs, stating that only around 1% of its workforce — roughly 6,000 employees — were let go, and that the numbers circulating online are “extremely exaggerated.”
According to Milind Lakkad, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) of TCS, the workforce optimization is part of the company’s routine annual performance cycle and not a mass layoff drive. “Every year, we evaluate employee performance and business requirements. This year’s number is consistent with past trends, and the figures being discussed in the media are highly overstated,” Lakkad said.
He added that TCS continues to hire talent across key technology areas such as AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data analytics. The company has also onboarded several thousand fresh graduates in the current financial year as part of its long-term talent strategy.
Industry experts note that global economic challenges and shifts in client spending patterns have pushed many IT firms to re-align resources and control costs. However, TCS maintains that its employee base remains stable and future-focused, emphasizing skill development and internal mobility.
As of June 2025, TCS’s total workforce stands at around 600,000 employees, making it one of the largest private-sector employers in India. The company reaffirmed its commitment to employee growth, training, and innovation, dismissing rumors of widespread job cuts.
