On October 8, 2025, Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer and former Inspector General of Rohtak Range, was found dead at his Sector 11 residence in Chandigarh. According to police reports, he died by suicide using his service revolver. His body was discovered in the basement by his daughter, alongside an eight-page handwritten note and a will that have since become the focus of a high-profile investigation.
Allegations in the Suicide Note
In the note, Kumar accused ten senior officers—both serving and retired—of subjecting him to continuous psychological harassment. He claimed that these individuals conspired to derail his career and isolate him professionally. Though the names have not been officially disclosed by Chandigarh Police, sources suggest the allegations may be linked to a corruption probe in Rohtak that Kumar had been overseeing.
Corruption Case and Mounting Pressure
Just days before his death, Kumar’s name surfaced in an FIR filed by Rohtak Police. The complaint, lodged by a liquor contractor, alleged that Kumar’s aide, Sushil Kumar, demanded a bribe of ₹2.5 lakh in the officer’s name. Sushil was arrested and reportedly confessed that he acted on Kumar’s instructions. Although the FIR has not been made public, the inclusion of Kumar’s name reportedly left him deeply distressed.
Recent Transfer and Career Timeline
Kumar had been transferred on September 29 to the Police Training College in Sunaria, Rohtak. Born on May 19, 1973, he was an engineering graduate and was scheduled to retire in May 2033. His sudden transfer and the corruption allegations appear to have compounded his mental anguish.
Prior Complaints to Government
Earlier, Kumar had written to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, questioning the legality of recent IPS promotions. He alleged that these promotions violated Union Home Ministry guidelines and were approved solely by the Finance Department, bypassing proper protocol.
