In a shocking incident on the Bengaluru–Mysuru National Highway (NH-275), a 54-year-old special sub-inspector from Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district was robbed by three armed men in the early hours of Thursday.
The victim, identified as PJ Shaji, a resident of Pudukuli village in the Nilgiris, serves as a special sub-inspector at the Cherambadi Police Station. Shaji was traveling with his wife and two children to Bengaluru to pick up his elder son, who had recently completed a hotel management course in Halasur.
According to the police report, Shaji parked his car on the service road near Lambani Tandya, Channapatna, around 1:45 am after feeling drowsy. Around 2 am, three men on a bike approached the vehicle and threatened the family with knives, demanding valuables.
The assailants allegedly robbed the family of a gold chain worth ₹10,000 and mobile phones, with the total loss estimated at around ₹1.35 lakh. Following the incident, the family sought help from a nearby police patrol team, and a case of robbery under Section 309(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered at the Channapatna Rural Police Station.
A senior police officer said, “A search is on for the accused. We are verifying CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace the culprits.”
The incident has raised serious concerns about night-time safety along the busy Bengaluru–Mysuru expressway, which has seen an increase in highway crimes in recent months.
