The much-awaited festival of lights — Diwali (Deepavali) — is around the corner, and students across India are gearing up for their festive breaks. Most schools across states have announced holiday schedules around October 20, 2025, when Diwali will be celebrated, while some states have extended breaks to include Kali Puja, Govardhan Puja, and Chhath Puja.
Below is the state-wise list of school holidays during the festive period.
Uttar Pradesh
Schools in Uttar Pradesh have declared Diwali holidays from October 20 to 23. With Sunday (October 19) already being a weekly off, students will enjoy a five-day holiday stretch, returning to school on October 24. This extended break gives students ample time to celebrate Diwali with family and participate in traditional festivities like Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj.
Haryana
In Haryana, all government and private schools will observe Diwali holidays from October 19 to 23, 2025. The state education department has coordinated the schedule to align with Delhi-NCR schools, ensuring a consistent festive break across the region.
Rajasthan
Students in Rajasthan are in for a festive jackpot — schools will remain closed from October 13 to 24.
This 12-day Diwali vacation is among the longest in India this year, allowing both teachers and students to celebrate Dhanteras, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj without interruption.
Delhi
In the national capital, schools in Delhi are likely to close on October 20 (Diwali) and October 22 (Govardhan Puja). The official Directorate of Education (DoE) notification is expected to mirror last year’s pattern, offering select festival holidays while keeping the academic calendar tight due to upcoming winter breaks.
Bihar
Schools in Bihar will remain closed from October 18 to 29, covering both Diwali and Chhath Puja celebrations. The extended break allows students to participate in Diwali rituals and prepare for Chhath Puja, a major festival celebrated across the state with devotion and traditional customs.
West Bengal
In West Bengal, schools will stay closed till October 24 due to the ongoing Puja vacation.
The festive holidays began early — from September 24 — after the government advanced the Durga Puja vacation in light of heavy rainfall and natural calamities.
With Kali Puja coinciding with Diwali on October 20, students continue to enjoy an extended month-long festive break.
Karnataka
In Karnataka, schools are shut till October 18 as teachers are participating in the state’s social and educational survey.
Additionally, schools are expected to remain closed on October 20 (Naraka Chaturdashi) and October 22 (Balipadyami / Diwali). This effectively gives students a few extra days off during the festival week.
Jammu & Kashmir
In Jammu & Kashmir, the administration is closely monitoring weather conditions, as certain areas in the Jammu Division continue to experience irregular rainfall.
Officials said that school holiday notifications will be announced depending on local weather forecasts. Parents and students are advised to follow district education office updates for confirmation.
Odisha
Schools in Odisha are likely to remain closed on October 20 for Deepavali and Kali Puja celebrations. Although a single-day holiday is expected, some districts may extend the break to include Govardhan Puja based on local traditions.
Assam
The Assam government is also expected to declare a school holiday on October 20 for Deepavali and Kali Puja.
Official announcements will be issued by the state education department soon, in line with other northeastern states.
